Through this initiative, the aim is to include gestures of welcome in the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting the fundamental role of hospitality in the political and cultural project of 21st-century Europe.

Since 2021, between Italy and France, the collectif PEROU (www.perou-paris.org) has been investigating gestures of hospitality at sea and along the coasts of Europe. The result is a travelling laboratory: around fifty schools of art, design, architecture and the humanities have participated in the work, and around sixty cultural institutions have supported and hosted it through public workshops. This research programme will culminate in 2025 with the completion of a dossier aimed at inscribing the gestures of welcome, care and friendship in the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, along with an action plan to transmit these practices to future generations.

In the name of hospitality

The collectif PEROU will organise a series of encounters aimed at exploring the potential of gestures of welcome as a universal symbol, promoting interaction between citizens, researchers, artists and international organisations to describe the gestures of hospitality, particularly through images. The year 2025 will focus on creating an iconographic archive of these practices—a collection of gestures that hold our humanity together—which will be used to produce 10 images and a 10-minute film to be presented in Lampedusa on 3 October 2025 during the Italian Day of Remembrance and Reception.

The programme promotes the participation of artists, cultural institutions and local communities, highlighting the key role of Agrigento as a crossroads of intercultural dialogue and a symbol of hospitality. Through the construction of the UNESCO Dossier, the project invites the public to reflect on the universal value of hospitality and the importance of preserving these practices for future generations.
