Between April and December 2025, the initiative will transform the provinces of Agrigento and Caltanissetta into a route that weaves together natural landscapes, ethno-anthropological traditions, unique architectures, and local flavors. The goal is to create a journey of knowledge and enhancement that goes beyond mere contemplation, actively involving local communities, institutions, and visitors.

The project unfolds through a series of actions aimed at telling the history and cultural value of gypsum, an element that has shaped the territory and its traditions. A digital platform will be created to collect studies and documentation, along with a documentary video that will explore not only the landscape but also the material and immaterial traces left by human activity. This digital tool will remain a living and adaptable reference over time, serving as a foundation for future initiatives.

To engage a wider audience, the project includes a dedicated conference, accompanied by the publication of an illustrated volume featuring images of the main natural and cultural landmarks related to gypsum. At the same time, itineraries will be developed that will cover geosites of regional importance, ancient workshops for the processing of scagliola, rural villages, archaeological sites, and museums, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the variety and richness of the territory. Locations such as Agrigento, Sant’Angelo Muxaro, Favara, Racalmuto, Raffadali, Santa Elisabetta, Montallegro, Caltanissetta, Sutera, and Canicattì will become stops on a journey that celebrates the beauty and identity of a lesser-known Sicily.

A bond between community and territory

Furthermore, the project goes beyond passive discovery and offers educational workshops to explore the theme of gypsum in a practical and creative way. These activities aim to actively engage local communities and young people, transmitting traditional knowledge and raising awareness about the cultural and environmental value of this element.

The Sicilian Gypsum Road is not just a journey through captivating places, but a collective narrative that connects the past and the future, transforming gypsum into a living symbol of memory and identity. Through the enhancement of often forgotten territories and traditions, the project aims to create a bond between communities and their roots, while simultaneously bringing new stimuli and opportunities for sustainable cultural tourism.
