This new CeSDAS project, entitled Collision Trajectories, reflects on the effects generated when bodies meet, collide, and change. It consists of three workshops with a specific focus on experimental Polish theatre. The first will be led from October 6 to 12 by Teatr Cinema, an award-winning Polish theatre company founded in 1992 by Zbigniew and Katharzyna Szumski. Since its inception, the company has created original performances aimed at a non-mainstream audience. Its style is rooted in surrealist imagery often inspired by paintings, which serve as dramaturgical stimuli shaping both the actors’ dynamics and the overall composition of the performance. The two founders conceive their work as “a revolt of imagination against everyday reality.” Theatre critics view the company’s artistic practice as the discovery and development of new visual values. This workshop will follow the Szumskis’ creative approach: students will be invited to take part in a process that begins with visual stimuli and will be guided towards the creation of a performance to be presented to the public. The second workshop, on October 13 and 14, will be an actor training session led by Paul Allain, Professor of Theatre and Performance at the University of Kent, UK. In addition to his work as a Movement Director and as a trainer of actors for institutions such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, Allain has published extensively on actor training and contemporary performance processes, both as author and editor, with a particular focus on contemporary Polish theatre and Suzuki Tadashi. His most recent project, The Digital Performer, explores the intersection of actor training and digital technologies. A specialist in Jerzy Grotowski and the Gardzienice Theatre Association, with whom he collaborated for many years, Paul Allain has received the Witkacy Award and recognition from the Polish government for his efforts in promoting Polish culture abroad. The third workshop, from October 16 to 22, will be conducted by Andrzej and Teresa Welminski. Their artistic production spans drawing, painting, photography, as well as the creation of performances, objects, and installations, characterized by the merging of theatre and visual art. In the 1970s, the two artists began collaborating with Tadeusz Kantor and became permanent members of Cricot 2 Theatre, taking part in all of the company’s productions and tours. Since 1996, as theatre directors, they have staged numerous independent projects presented at international festivals, including Avignon, São Paulo, Rome, Valladolid, Cagliari, Edinburgh, Bratislava, Moscow, Sibiu, Chișinău, and Tehran. Their most recent works (Suspension Condition, Urania, Esse est percipi) explore themes, meanings, and codes that have been central to their long-standing artistic activity in bridging visual and performing arts. Their workshop will focus on the dramaturgical and performative use of objects, culminating in a final performance directed by the two Polish artists. |
