Call for scores – the open call for musicians of the Mediterranean

Agrigento, Italian Capital of Culture 2025, will become the stage for the meeting between contemporary music and the Mediterranean. With the “Call for Scores” open call, in collaboration with the renowned ensemble Klangforum Wien, emerging composers are invited to explore themes such as identity, hospitality, and connection through new compositions. Discover how to take part in this extraordinary opportunity and be inspired by a chance to create cultural dialogue.

A musical journey for a united Mediterranean

 The Mediterranean has always been a place of encounters, exchanges, and cultural transformations. The Call for Scores invites composers to translate this rich complexity into sound, giving musical form to the themes of hospitality, mobility, and proximity. Participation is open to composers born or residing in countries bordering the Mediterranean, regardless of nationality or length of residence.

Requirements for participation

Interested musicians must submit a single composition that meets the following criteria:

  • Duration: between 7 and 20 minutes.
  • Maximum instrumentation:
    • 2 flutes (including piccolo), 1 oboe (including English horn), 2 clarinets (including bass clarinet), 1 bassoon
    • 1 saxophone (soprano, alto, or tenor), 1 horn, 1 trumpet, 1 trombone
    • 2 percussionists, 1 accordion, 1 harp, 1 piano
    • Strings: 3 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos, 1 double bass
  • The piece can be either unpublished or previously performed

In addition to the score, applicants must submit:

  • A curriculum vitae (in English) and contact information
  • A short description of the piece, including instrumentation, duration, recording (if available), and its connection to the themes of the Call for Scores

Deadlines and selection

  • Submission deadline: January 24, 2025.
  • The selected pieces will be announced by February 10, 2025.
  • Rehearsals and the concert will take place between April 24 and 26, 2025, at the Teatro Pirandello in Agrigento.

The selected composers will be hosted during the rehearsal and performance days.
